Current #1’s

The current number ones in the Canadian music charts are mostly reflective of the charts around the world. Canada is one of many countries that share popular songs in the hit parade. This is due to the fact that the biggest tracks are able to be released throughout the world. Music streaming has played a big part in the success of these songs and albums.

Album Chart

Several big names have recently been competing for the top album spot. Harry Styles came close with Fine Line. So too did the cast of the animated kids film Frozen 2. Veteran singers Celine Dion and Leonard Cohen also saw their albums rise up in the charts. Lover by Taylor Swift was a major contender. However, the artists that made it to number one were JackBoys with their self titled release. JackBoys are a collective of numerous rappers who are signed with Cactus Jack Records.

Pop Chart

The pop singles charts have been mostly dominated by already established tracks. These are songs that were very popular in 2019 and continue to do well at the start of the new year. Bad Guy by Billie Eilish is a good example.

So too is Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved. Hit selling rapper Post Malone and pop star Lizzo released songs that almost took the top spot. In the end, it was the catchy dance track Dance Monkey by Tones And I that reached number one. It has proven to be very popular thanks to its infectious beat, click-clacking percussion and fun vocals.

Country Chart

Many of the hit country songs came from Canadian artists. One of the country’s most famous musical export, Justin Bieber, was featured on 10,000 Hours by Dan + Shay. Remember You Young by Thomas Rhett and Even Though I’m Leaving by Luke Combs rose up the country chart. Number one was attained by Heartache Medication by Jon Pardi. It is a fun, toe-tapping tune that is reminiscent of US country-rock. The same can also be said for its country and western-influenced music video. Jon Pardi manages to convey a strong sense of charisma and charm through his vocals.

Rock Chart

Some of the biggest names that rose on the rock chart include Weezer, The Glorious Sons, The Black Keys and Ozzy Osbourne. It was harder for newer acts to make a dent. This was due to the already established fame of older artists. Currently, Father Of All by Green Day is reigning supreme. It marks a change in direction for the band. This song has a faster pace compared to earlier Green Day tracks. The vocal style has also changed because of auto-tuning technology, which has become heavily utilized.

Metal Chart

Much like the rock chart, the top metal songs are currently from artists that have established themselves for many years. One exception is the soundtrack to the Netflix show, The Witcher. Metallica, TOOL and Five Finger Death Punch are high up. However, a collaboration between Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John is now number one with their song, Ordinary Man, a single from Ozzy Osbourne’s upcoming album. The fact that the full album has not been released yet is one of the main reasons why the song has reached number one.
